The number of people testing positive for HIV in the UK rose sharply and many other sexually transmitted infections are also becoming more prevalent.
And the picture is the same for young people. The figures for 10- to 24-year-olds showed a 10 per cent increase in the number of HIV infections between June 2003 and June 2004 (YPN, 1-7 December, p5).
Gareth Davies, senior project manager for youth work at the Terrence Higgins Trust, said HIV remains a relatively low concern for young people in the UK. "You could say that young people globally are disproportionately affected by HIV but that is not the case in this country," he said.
