The code provides guidance to registered medical practitioners, approvedclinicians, managers and staff of hospitals and approved mental healthpractitioners, who have defined responsibilities under the provisions ofthe Act, on how they should proceed when undertaking duties under thelegislation. Other people working in health and social services,including the independent and voluntary sectors, should also considerthe laws.
The Mental Health Regulations 2008 are essentially an update of thecurrent Mental Health Regulations 1983. They include regulationsrelating to supervised community treatment, nearest relatives and formsof medical treatment. They are subject to special safeguards under theAct, which are similar in purpose or subject matter to the existingregulations. New and revised forms will also be required for updatedregulations.
