
Perhaps unsurprisingly for something dubbed the "Cinderella service", the state of child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in England has been lamented for some time.
Even prior to austerity measures, concerns were consistently raised about the variability of both community-based and hospital services from region to region, and a lack of focus from central government on the implications of failing to support young people appropriately.
In recent months, disquiet has reached a crescendo though. In July, a report published by NHS England admitted some children were being placed in in-patient units hundreds of miles from their home because of a shortage of beds.
