Labour to prioritise children's mental health

The Labour Party has promised to radically improve children's mental health services if it wins the general election in May.

A report by a mental health taskforce set up by Labour leader Ed Miliband in 2012 highlights that just six per cent of the overall mental health budget is spent on children, despite three quarters of adult mental health illness beginning before the age of 18.

It also points to a range of prevention and early intervention services being “stripped back” in recent years, including child and adolescent mental health services, early intervention in psychosis services and the Early Intervention Grant which funds Sure Start.

“Labour will work to reverse the damage suffered by child mental health services under this government,” Miliband said.
