Q: My centre opens during the day for unemployed young people. Two boys who are truanting have started turning up. They are regular attendees and have taken part in some good workshops. I don't want to lose their trust by reporting them, so what should I do?
A: I understand why you would not want to damage a good working relationship, but there are several issues here. If the young people are supposed to be at school while attending your sessions, you are colluding with their truancy.
Plus, there are legal obligations that their parents or guardians will have to adhere to, and they may be prosecuted if the boys do attend school. They also have a significant investment in knowing where their kids are.
