Welsh disability fund 'not sufficient'

Health
The campaign manager of Disabled Children Matter Wales has slammed the Welsh Assembly Government for failing to provide sufficient funding to improve the lives of disabled children and young people.

Ministers announced a two-year funding package worth £2.75m last week, which will pay for play opportunities, short breaks for children with complex needs and an awareness scheme.

But Keith Bowen described the funding package as "underwhelming" and claimed the cash would amount to little when distributed between 22 local authorities over two years.

"Obviously it's a difficult funding period for everyone," he said. "But it's disheartening that our hard work hasn't been met with financial backing."

Children's minister Jane Hutt said disabled children are a "priority" in Wales. She said: "We have made a substantial commitment to improving services for disabled children and we are working closely with the Disabled Children Matter campaign to make a real difference."
