What is it? The Waterloo Foundation is an independent grant-making foundation created in 2007, based in Cardiff. The organisation’s main areas of focus are child development, the environment, world development and Wales. The foundation’s Child Development programme offers grants to organisations conducting research in children’s psychological and behavioural development – specifically psychological research and mental health.
How much is on offer? The programme typically provides funding of up to £50,000 for individual research projects. The foundation favours projects where a small contribution yields significant results and its policy is to pay only for the direct costs involved in any research programme and not to pay for indirect overheads. The charity also occasionally supports the dissemination of knowledge and best practice to children, their carers, and related professionals. Grants for this work are typically up to £10,000.
What will it fund? Research projects must have clear benefit to children with neuro-developmental conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and their family members. Studies that most closely benefit patients are prioritised. Successful bidders are expected to disseminate findings within the scientific community to professionals, to individuals affected by the condition, and to the public.
When is the deadline? The deadline for the next round of funding, focused on ADHD and developmental factors that are under parents’ influence, such as sleep and diet, is on 1 July. A decision on successful applications will be made in November.
