What is it? The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) funds, develops and evaluates cost-effective projects that address educational disadvantage in English primary and secondary schools.
Founded by the education charity the Sutton Trust, the EEF is funded by a £125m grant from the Department for Education. It focuses on supporting innovative new projects and on scaling up projects that have already had a measurable impact on attainment.
How much is on offer? The smallest grants are typically in the order of £50,000 a year, reaching at least 100 students. Registered charities, not-for-profit organisations, local authorities, individual schools, clusters of schools, teacher groups, universities, colleges, academy chains, mutuals and co-operatives can all apply for funding. The foundation has a particular interest in funding projects that benefit pupils eligible for free school meals.
What will it fund? Projects funded by the foundation include a scheme to provide training to all teachers in more than 50 schools, helping them to improve their classroom practice. Another project aims to test new ways of using teaching assistants in primary schools.
Support offered by the EEF will depend on an assessment of the needs of the host organisation and the scale and nature of the project. As well as a financial grant, an organisation might also be offered capacity-building support and other advice and expertise.
When is the deadline? The current round closes on 1st October 2014, at 5pm.
