Warwickshire County Council's extended services

What did they do? Pupils from Barford St Peter's Church of England Primary School have been working on a project with local artist Jenny Hetherington, as part of a scheme to create artwork at seven schools in the Warwick West extended services cluster.

What did it involve? Pupils took photographs of their local area and the wider community. The pictures were then used to form the basis of a mosaic, which was created by making a collage of the snaps and covering it in Perspex.

What did the children think? Adam Gallagher, a Year 6 pupil who worked on the mural, says: "I liked the art project because it gave the children the chance to contribute to a piece of artwork that will stay in the school forever."

And the professionals? "Extended services has given school children throughout the cluster a chance to create their own impression on their school's environment," says Heather Timms, Warwickshire Council's lead member for children, young people and families. "The artwork is prominently displayed in the schools, usually the first thing you see when you enter the building, and it has given so many pupils a real sense of pride in their school and community."
