What did they do? Pupils at Walter Evans school took part in Spellathon, in which almost 300 children were sponsored for every word they spelled correctly. The school collectively raised more than 2,000 for the learning disability charity Mencap.

Who organised it? The competition, which runs annually for children aged four to 13, was organised by Mencap. The charity provided teachers with classroom packs, including teaching materials on learning disabilities and Oxford University Press spelling lists.

How were pupils rewarded? Walter Evans raised more money than any other school in the country, so pupils received a special visit from the TV character Fourarms (pictured top right), who is featured in the cartoon Ben 10.

What did teachers and parents think? Head teacher Hannah Simmons said everyone involved was enthusiastic. "The competition was well supported by parents. Spellathon has helped the school drive to improve spelling standards, as well as supporting Mencap," she said.
