Vulnerable families: Charity calls for parent advocates

1 min read
A children's charity has called on the Government to create a network of parent advocates to support and champion the cause of vulnerable families.

The recommendation from 4Children aims to tackle family breakdown andchild poverty and prevent families falling into crisis. A report by thecharity says a network of parent advocates and brokers could helpparents "understand the system and identify and articulate the needs ofthe family" and ensure they get the help they need.

The Mind the Gap report also recommends creating more incentives forchildren's trusts to spend money on preventative work and training thoseworking with children to offer more support for vulnerable families.

Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, said: "Many families withcomplex needs simply fall through the net. We need to step in early toprevent a crisis, not just to treat and mitigate its effects - to dothis we need a seamless system of support for families in trouble sothat they can get the help they need at an early stage."
