Vulnerable Children: Project to support children in Leeds

1 min read
Hard-to-reach children in Leeds are to benefit from a new service launched this week.

The Children in Vulnerable Accommodation project has been set up to support children in homeless hostels and hostels for women suffering from domestic violence, Traveller children, and asylum-seeking children living in induction centres.

Funded by Leeds Children's Fund and Leeds City Council, and run by housing charity Carr-Gomm, the project has nine staff, including two education support workers and two play workers.

Project co-ordinator Paul Bollom said play facilities were commonly available in hostels, and that play professionals could play a particularly important role in helping children to access other services.

He cited the example of an asylum-seeking child, playing to help overcome a distressing situation, who could then be helped to find a school, or to have mental health needs referred by other professionals in the team.
