Leeds makes strides for vulnerable children

Leeds City Council has made significant improvements in services for vulnerable and at-risk children, according to Ofsted inspectors.

Concerns were raised during the last full inspection of safeguarding in July 2009 when services in the city were rated as "inadequate", but the latest report said this has now improved.

Inspectors found that "arrangements to ensure children are safeguarded are now secure", and also pointed to "significant progress in improving outcomes".

Five of the nine measures inspected are now assessed as "good", with the other four rated as adequate.

The improvement comes a year after the appointment of Nigel Richardson, an adviser to Lord Laming during the Victoria Climbié inquiry, to the post of director of children’s services.

Richardson said staff have worked "extremely hard" in challenging circumstances to implement improvements to keep children and young people safe from the risk of serious harm.
