Vox pop - Should schools get cash for recruiting from poor areas?

2 mins read
The think-tank Policy Exchange says England's school funding system penalises schools in disadvantaged areas. It has recommended that schools get an extra 3,000 for every child they take from the poorest postcodes.

The Liberal Democrats are the only party that has committed to this sort of "pupil premium" and identified the money to pay for it. The poorest children are falling behind in the first years of primary school: things have got to change.

I want a system where schools get money per pupil, receiving significantly extra for those from the most deprived backgrounds. To bring investment for the poorest children up to private school levels would cost about £2.5bn and I have committed to scrapping means-tested tax credits for higher earners to pay for this. That's the way to create a fairer, more equal Britain.
