Vox Pop: Should schools be told how to spend the pupil premium?

1 min read Education
While schools will be given guidance on how to spend the pupil premium, some organisations have called for it to be ringfenced.

YES - Martin Johnson, deputy general secretary, Association of Teachers and Lecturers

The pupil premium should be monitored but within the context of a review of all of the levers placed on schools.

If we want schools to concentrate their attention on the poorest and/or the lowest achieving pupils, this has to be reflected in all accountable levers.

I challenged a panel at a fringe meeting at the Liberal Democrat party conference - they were all speaking in favour of greater autonomy for schools. That's fine, except everyone wants their pet priorities to be implemented too. That's a problem.

NO - Philippa Stobbs, principal officer, Council for Disabled Children
