Vox pop - Should nurseries ban mobile phones to protect children?

1 min read Early Years
The union Voice is calling for mobile phones to be banned from nurseries to protect children and staff from illicit photography.

YES - Purnima Tanuku, chief executive, National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA)

NDNA believes nurseries should ban mobile phones while staff are working for both quality and child protection reasons.

Staff should not be using a mobile while caring for children. Not only does their concentration need to be on the children but it is important for a professional image. A nursery should have its own camera, stored securely, so there is no need for staff to use their own equipment to record children's progress.

However, nurseries do need to allow staff to use mobiles in areas such as the staffroom during breaks. Members also tell us they allow staff to use the nursery telephone during emergency situations.
