Vox pop - Should the police take away troublemakers' mobiles?

1 min read Youth Justice
The Conservatives have set out plans to confiscate mobile phones to disrupt antisocial behaviour committed by young people

NO: Lyn Costello, co-founder, Mothers Against Murder and Aggression

Police are not there to parent, but to enforce the law. Confiscation or grounding measures are the job of parents.

Sim cards cost five pounds, young people will just replace them if they are taken away. The message we should be giving is that our police force is a serious agency there to prevent crime and enforce the law.

We need to adopt a multi-agency approach, targeting young people who are behaving badly, and provide training, support and guidance to change the lifestyle and mindset of the young people themselves and very often the parents. This will not be as cheap, but will be far more effective.
