Votes at 16: Campaign to lower voting age goes on

Twigg told the British Youth Council's annual general meeting that the coming months would be a critical period for the Votes at 16 campaign.

"It's really an area that is still up for grabs," he told YPN. "I've always supported votes at 16 and my colleagues have expressed the same point of view."

Twigg would not be drawn on whether votes at 16 would form part of Labour's manifesto, but admitted that the Electoral Commission's rejection of the idea earlier this year was a setback (YPN, 21-27 April, p4).

"The Electoral Commission report is not helpful for those of us who have argued for such a change," he said. "I don't think the battle is lost: it's simply an argument that still needs to be won."
