At a conference on youth volunteering last week organised by the charity Rainer, commission chair Baroness Julia Neuberger told delegates: "Some younger people will talk to someone of their own age group, but might not want to talk to a lot of old wrinklies like me."
Neuberger said the commission was building on the work of the Russell Commission in finding ways of tackling the barriers to young people volunteering. She described the concept of intergenerational volunteering, promoted at the conference by third sector minister Ed Miliband, as "key" to the vision.
The commission was set up to develop a long-term vision for volunteering in England and will report next autumn with recommendations on changes needed.
