Views sought on diets of pupils

Health
Nearly 60 organisations are being asked for views on proposals to make Welsh schools and local authorities do more to improve the diet of pupils.

Liberal Democrat Welsh Assembly member Jenny Randerson's measures would see inspectors assess schools on their efforts to promote healthy eating. It would also put a duty on local councils, requiring them to do more to get children who are entitled to free school meals to take up the benefit.

Estyn, the Association of Directors of Education and the National Farmers' Union are among those being consulted during the next six weeks. Randerson will publish proposals for the Welsh Assembly to approve once the consultation ends.

"Progress on school meals has been very piecemeal so far," Randerson told CYP Now. "We need a policy that addresses the promotion of healthy eating as well as the content of meals."
