The aim of the hospital programme was to reduce mortality and adverse events in hospitals.
It demanded change on a national scale, achieved through the formation of a collaborative – essentially a learning community dedicated to achieving the programme's aims.
The results were remarkable. There has been a sustained change over time, across Scotland, which saves lives and has attracted international recognition. At the start of this year, an Early Years Collaborative was set up to take the lessons learned from the National Patient Safety Programme and apply them to developing improved early years experiences for children and families.
The collaborative has grown out of the Scottish government's 2009 Early Years Framework, which established an Early Years Taskforce charged with putting children at the centre of service delivery and achieving "transformational change".
