
On Friday (26 February) it was announced that from mid-April the second phase of the programme will target 40- to 49-year-olds, once the vaccination of older age groups and the clinically vulnerable, as part of phase one, is complete.
The move has angered the sector, which argues that staff are more vulnerable to infection due to the type of work they do.
Research undertaken by the Early Years Alliance in partnership with analysts Ceeda last month revealed that one in 10 nursery and pre-school staff, and one in 12 childminders, had contracted Covid-19 since 1 December. Meanwhile, recent Ofsted statistics revealed reports of positive cases in early years settings doubled over a seven-day period in January.
