Union chief voices concerns to PM

Careers Social Care
The head of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has written to the Prime Minister raising concerns about a government review of the role of children's social workers.

In his letter to Gordon Brown, BASW chief executive Ian Johnston said while he welcomes the Department for Children, Schools and Families review, he was concerned about how it is being carried out.

"We are concerned that it appears to have been developed unilaterally, rather than in conjunction with the Department of Health and the Ministry of Justice who also have responsibility for newly-qualified social workers, and of course local government who are the major employers of social workers."

Johnston's letter said it was essential for social workers to have an understanding of both children's and adult social services.

BASW has received an acknowledgement of the letter from Number 10.
