BASW chief attacks child protection outsourcing plans

Proposals for private firms to run child protection services are "unacceptable", the head of the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) has said.

Bridget Robb, chief executive of the organisation, said social work in England is facing a time of “unprecedented” change because local government in England is “collapsing” and services are being commissioned out to third parties.

“It is not acceptable that vulnerable children and adults are handed over to the care of private companies and just monitored by the state through commissioning," she said, speaking at BASW's annual general meeting.

"Our children and vulnerable adults deserve better from us.”

The proposals to outsource children’s services to private firms, including child protection, were first mooted by then Education Secretary Michael Gove in November 2013 in a bid to find alternative providers to run failing children’s services.
