Unclaimed assets: Commission plans social bank for youth funding

The report from the Commission on Unclaimed Assets is expected to influence Treasury proposals on using the money. More details of the government plans are likely to be included in the Budget next week.

The report addresses technical concerns involved in the creation of the bank, and mechanisms for releasing unclaimed assets from accounts if the account holder cannot be tracked down.

Toby Eccles, a member of the secretariat of the commission, said the bank would channel money to third sector groups.

"Our focus is on supporting marginalised communities, including young people, but we have to get to the nitty gritty of how that can happen," he said.
