UKYP call for review on sex education

Health Youth Work
Members of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) are to meet with government officials to discuss how sex and relationship education should be part of the National Curriculum.

The meeting is scheduled for the end of January. It follows a meeting between the same group of young people and schools minister Jim Knight before Christmas.

The UKYP is running a campaign calling for sex and relationship education to become a compulsory part of personal, social and health education. A spokeswoman for the UKYP said they felt very strongly about the subject.

In July last year the UKYP published the results of a survey, which quizzed 20,000 young people on the sex education they received. More than half of the teenagers who took part said sex education at their school was inadequate, with 55 per cent of 12- to 15-year-olds saying they had not been taught how to use a condom.
