The project plans to help young New Travellers (formerly New Age Travellers) access local services, including schools and youth services, and help them get their opinions heard.
The Children's Society aims to work with 13- to 18-year-old New Travellers.
The 135,000 project covers the Wessex area and was formed in response to A Minority Report, a Children's Society's study of New Travellers that was published last year (YPN, 7-13 April 2004, p5).
Jim Davis, project manager at The Children's Society, said the project, which is backed by a three-year grant from the Big Lottery Fund, would work across local authority boundaries to support young people as they move around.
