A Minority Report, commissioned by two Connexions partnerships, Dorset and Somerset, looked into the lives of 30 Traveller teenagers. Feelings of isolation and powerlessness were reported by the New Travellers (formerly New Age Travellers).
The report found their lives were blighted by issues including poverty, bullying and a lack of access to services such as transport, information, education, permanent sites and water.
The report calls for a Traveller lead officer in all agencies that have a duty to provide services for young people. In addition, secondary school education for Travellers should become a priority for local authorities when moving families on.
