Big interview: Rights for young Travellers - Sam Wilson, Traveller project worker, Hart Voluntary Action

Local hostility is an ongoing issue. "I have heard local councillors talk about Travellers in an openly hostile and racist way," says Sam Wilson, Traveller project worker at Hart Voluntary Action in Hampshire. "The Government has been inhuman in its approach towards the Gypsy community and young Travellers, moving them along with not enough sites to go to."

In Hampshire, a three-year project that began last August has been working to promote social inclusion, particularly for young Gypsy Travellers.

The focus is a special bus, situated in the New Forest. Supported by the Community Fund, it enables the Traveller community to meet with a range of agencies including Connexions and the local education authority Traveller service.
