Children's minister Beverley Hughes revealed new figures about the takeup of the Transformation Fund in response to a parliamentary questionfrom Labour backbencher Joan Humble. It follows concerns that many localauthorities are choosing not to spend the fund (Children Now, 15-21November).
Hughes said: "Plans submitted by local authorities for using theTransformation Fund between 2006 and 2008 showed that more than 26,000childcarers intend to study for Level 3 qualifications, more than 8,500intend to study for Level 4 qualifications and more than 7,000 intend tostudy for Level 5 qualifications."
She said the plans also showed that "over 4,000 settings across theprivate, voluntary and independent sectors" are expected to employ agraduate who will work towards the new Early Years ProfessionalStatus.
