Training: Youth work courses feel effect of rise in university tuition fees

At the Community and Youth Workers' Union (CYWU) annual conference, delegates passed a motion on youth work training. It noted that the University of Birmingham plans to close its Westhill Community, Play and Youth Work programme to full-time undergraduates, when top-up tuition fees are introduced.

The change means higher education institutions will be able to charge up to 3,000 a year for their courses.

Ellie Green, the student convenor at the CYWU, said youth work students were being hit particularly hard because many come from poorer backgrounds.

"It is starting to become a factor that will exclude some very good people from taking up degree courses," she said.
