TRAINING: Employer-led skills agency hits hurdle

1 min read

The Sector Skills Development Agency, the agency that oversees the work of the employer-led Sector Skills Councils, said it was against proposals for a children's services council, as championed in the green paper, Every Child Matters.

A development agency spokeswoman said: "Children's services are covered by existing Sector Skills Councils, so we don't support the development of a separate one for children's services. We would encourage a strategic alliance of existing councils whose remits cover this area."

The Department for Education and Skills said no decision had been taken since the mat-ter remains under consultation.

If the Sector Skills Development Agency's approach is adopted, it is likely that youth work would be covered by a lifelong learning Sector Skills Council, an approach welcomed by the Community and Youth Workers' Union.
