Tory cash plan for forces children

Education
If returned to power at the next election, the Conservative Party will spend extra money on teaching the children of armed forces personnel to help counter their educational under-performance.

A report by the party's commission on the military covenant cited data from Wiltshire County Council that showed children from military families do less well at school.

The commission said this under-performance was because these children can change schools up to 11 times during their school lives, which affects their "emotional and educational wellbeing".

To counter the problem, the commission has proposed creating a "pupil premium" that would allocate extra funding to children from military families so they could get additional support in school.

A spokesman for the Department for Children, Schools and Families said: "We are aware of the mobility problems that armed services' children face and are looking at these issues as part of the funding formula review."
