Tories urged to assist third sector

The Conservatives face calls to make commissioning fairer for smaller charities to run children's centres.

Sector leaders have called on the Tories to commit to making the commissioning process more accessible for voluntary organisations to run children's centres.

The calls come following comments made by shadow families minister Maria Miller at last week's Conservative Party conference in Manchester, where she announced she would like to see more voluntary organisations in charge of children's centres.

"There is definitely scope for more centres to be run by the voluntary and community sector as a number of organisations are already running excellent centres," said Maggie Jones, chief executive of Children England. "But in some ways this is limited by competitive commissioning, as smaller organisations struggle to back bids for funding with the same level of resources as larger charities."
