Tories unveil youth skills focus

The Conservatives indicate tackling youth unemployment will be at the forefront of their election campaign.

Launching the Conservatives' election campaign at the party's annual conference in Birmingham, Prime Minister David Cameron made a bold pledge to "abolish" youth unemployment.

Despite claiming that youth unemployment has fallen sharply under Cameron's leadership, the Conservatives believe that too many young people are still dependent on state hand-outs and want to focus on developing and improving the job skills of 18- to 21-year-olds in a bid to achieve the Prime Minister's ambition.

First, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced that the party would create three million new apprenticeships for young people struggling to find work.

During his speech, he revealed that the new apprenticeships would be funded by cutting the annual benefit cap by £3,000 to £26,000.
