Child benefit: Tories to focus on childcare options

1 min read
The Conservatives have said they will consider overhauling child benefit to give parents more choice about childcare.

The party's childcare spokesman Paul Goodman MP revealed the plan atlast week's party conference. He told Children Now it would mean allparents would get extra cash, rather than just those who work.

He added it was unlikely that the party would load funding to favourmothers who stay at home, a route traditionally associated withConservative thinking.

Instead, leader David Cameron will attempt to strike a balance betweenfunding that helps mothers who want to stay at home, and childcarebenefits for those who want to work.

Goodman said: "Cameron has floated making tax allowances transferable. That would clearly only help women not in the labour market. But if youcouple that with making the cost of childcare tax deductible, onlyhelping those in the labour market, you get a balance."
