1 min read
The Conservative Party is examining plans to give private and voluntary sector nurseries the same tax breaks as schools, Children Now can reveal.

Paul Goodman, the shadow childcare minister, said options being lookedat included abolishing VAT and business rates bills for nurseries. Hesaid changes of this kind are needed because private and voluntarynurseries are at a disadvantage since local authorities act as bothcommissioners and providers of childcare services.

"There's certainly a sense that private and voluntary nurseries are notoperating on a level playing field and we're looking at ways to levelthat field," he told Children Now, adding that a mix of public, privateand voluntary nurseries is needed.

Goodman also said the party is considering giving tax credits tograndparents who care for their grandchildren as part of its childcarepolicies.
