Critics round on Tories' National Citizen Service

The former chief executive of the National Youth Agency has described the Conservatives' flagship youth programme as a "gimmick" and urged the government to support existing youth work services instead.

Tom Wylie has hit out at the cuts facing youth services and questionedhow the Tories' National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme will be funded andstaffed when the sector is under increasing pressure.

In July, the coalition government confirmed it is to go ahead with plansto run pilot programmes of the scheme, for 10,000 young people nextsummer.

"With the coalition government taking a blowtorch to the fabric of youthservices, it is surprising that they are pressing on with piloting theNational Citizen Service initiative," Wylie said. "One cannot be againstyoung people having opportunities for personal development and communityservice. This is simply the wrong way to go about it."
