Together We Can End Violence Against Women and Children

The Home Secretary has launched a public consultation to investigate violence against women and girls in the UK.

We hear a lot about violence against young men - what about violence against women? It's a hot topic too. In recent years, there has been a lot of government activity to tackle specific issues, such as domestic violence and forced marriage. Until now, however, there's been no cross-government effort to investigate violence against women or to develop ways of combating it.

Until now? On 9 March, the Home Secretary launched a public consultation that's intended to raise awareness of the scale and seriousness of the problem, and to encourage debate on the solutions, including consideration of whether they lie with the people involved, the communities that they live and work in, or the government. There's an online public survey, as well as the formal consultation paper and impact assessment. And the government is promising mobile roadshows, regional stakeholder events, and focus groups for victims of violence. All of this activity will eventually feed into a cross-government strategy.
