Children's leaders call for the Conservatives to curb cuts but deliver on other pledges.

Children's charities have called for key Conservative manifesto pledges to expand free childcare hours, the National Citizen Service scheme and apprenticeship places to be delivered following the party's outright win in the general election.

There is concern however among child poverty campaigners that the Tories' pledge to make £30bn of cuts to government departments and welfare spending over the next parliament will have dire consequences for the wellbeing of some of the most disadvantaged children and families.

Alison Garnham, chief executive of Child Poverty Action Group, has urged the Conservative Party - which won 331 seats at the polls and an overall majority of 12 MPs - to rethink its tough stance on further welfare cuts and instead prioritise tackling child poverty.
