The Steps programme, Staines Learning Centre

1 min read Education Extra-curricular
What did they do? Young people on the alternative education programme at Staines Learning Centre organised a sponsored bikeathon to raise cash to kit out a new chillout room at the centre.

The idea came about when the young people were asked to take on a challenge as part of their work towards gaining nationally accredited certificates.

How did it go? The young people completed their 30.5km route in under two hours. Kay Couldrey, who runs the Steps programme, says the current students' efforts will benefit future learners at the centre. "All this hard work isn't primarily for them. They are mainly doing it for the benefit of the young people who join in September and in future years," she explains. "Our funding does not cover extras like this, so the young people decided they would raise the money themselves and are expecting to raise £340."
