The Placement: An anonymous account of a real social work placement

1 min read Social Care
I am in the second year of a social work degree and this is my first placement. I am working with a charity that works with vulnerable families, mainly mothers suffering from mental health issues or domestic violence.

Mismanagement by my university meant I started in March rather than November. My plan was to work in the summer holidays but instead I have been on placement without any financial help, as my student loan does not cover the summer and neither does my bursary. I put in a formal complaint on behalf of six of us. Two have already dropped out.

Family strain

If the placement was not so good, I would have left too, because the financial impact was too much for me and because I could not be around for my two children. My youngest is 12 and I had to leave her at home unattended.
