The Placement: An anonymous account of a real social work placement

When I finish my two-year social work Masters, I'll be working with children and families in a local authority for two years, but for my first placement, I've been working with adults in a mental health drop-in centre.

Hostility

Because a lot of the people who use the service have been attending for many years, they're instantly aware of a new face, so it was quite intimidating at first.

I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely everybody was, but I sensed a hostility to social workers, who 'don't stay for a cup of tea'.

New cooker

I worked with a Moroccan lady last week, who has an eight- and a 12-year-old. We were applying for a community care grant to buy a new cooker. She kept saying: "I can't cook them a hot meal, what do I do?"

I know a lot more about the grants and benefits that are available now. She got £330 to buy the cooker.
