In 1999, the UN General Assembly endorsed a recommendation, proposed by young people, that this day be declared International Youth Day. This year it follows the theme of youth in an intergenerational society.

According to the UN, today's society is the youngest it has ever been.

Almost half of the world's population is currently aged 25 years or under.

However, it is has also been estimated that by 2050, the population of people above the age of 65 will have almost quadrupled, while the proportion of young people will have declined by a third. By the middle of this century, the old and the young are expected to represent an equal share of the world's population.
