Summer pastimes such as barbecues and afternoon parties increase the occasions where people are drinking alcohol and driving. This may take drivers above the limit at which it is legal to drive. Police forces across the country are keen to tackle those offenders who deliberately ignore drink-drive laws.
The current legal limit for driving is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
This, however, is under review by the Government and it is possible that it will introduce a reduced rate of 50mg of alcohol. This will bring the UK into line with most other mainland countries in Europe.
It is important to note that there are no simple rules that can be used to calculate how much you can drink and yet stay under the limit. Whether you drink on an empty stomach, the amount and type of alcohol you drink, your body weight, sex, age, metabolic rate and how regular a drinker you are all play their part.
