Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) is making the issue of salt and the older population the theme of this year's campaign. Issues relating to salt and a healthier diet are particularly important for young people too.

Children's diets can impact on the development of risk factors such as obesity, high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease and strokes later in adult life.

The awareness day aims to educate the public on the importance of reducing salt in the diet and how this can be achieved in a practical way. The main source of salt in the UK diet is salt added in food processing and manufacture. This accounts for about 80 per cent of our salt intake and is hidden in foods such as bread, some cereals, meat products and ready prepared meals. For more information, visit the campaign web site at www.actiononsalt.org.uk or visit youthinformation.com for details about healthier lifestyles.
