The National Youth Agency: Quality - Online social networking report calls for positive policy approach

Research published by The National Youth Agency is calling on policy and practice responses to online social networking to focus on capacity building first, rather than blocking first.

A major finding of the report, Youth Work and Social Networking, is thatyouth work responses have a key role to play in addressing widerconcerns about the opportunities and risks of online socialnetworking.

The report, prepared for The NYA by consultants Practical Participation'says internet filtering, a blocking first approach, hampers efforts tosupport young people.

Strategies need to be developed to build young people's capacity tomanage risk and exploit opportunities. It identifies training needs foryouth workers, including opportunities to explore online socialnetworking to boost confidences.

Report author Tim Davies said: "Youth workers are working with some ofthe most at-risk young people. Social network sites are key spaces foryoung people's personal and social development.
