This event was developed by a steering group that came together under the auspices of The NYA. It aims to enable youth workers based in schools and colleges to share practice, offer support, influence policy and develop their roles. Those attending will also be asked to consider the pros and cons of a federation for youth workers based in schools, sixth form and further education colleges.
The need for the event stems from the fact that that the bulk of young people with whom the youth service seeks to work are full-time students in schools and colleges and that, for various reasons, these educational institutions are increasingly employing qualified youth workers. Developments from Every Child Matters: Change for Children and the policy of extended schools mean this is likely to grow.
