The ultrasound devices emit a high-pitched noise, inaudible to anyone over 25, that is so irritating to young people they cannot bear to be in the vicinity.
The National Youth Agency is leading the campaign jointly with 11 Million, the Office of the Children's Commissioner for England. Fiona Blacke, NYA chief executive, said: "While this might seem superficially attractive to shop owners wanting to tackle antisocial behaviour, it is clear that stigmatising all young people in the same way is deeply unjust."
The main aim of the Buzz Off campaign is to get all these devices switched off, and have different councils and police forces realise there are more effective methods of tackling antisocial behaviour.
