Developing approaches to young people's voluntary action is the second in a series of briefing papers aimed at helping senior youth work managers to keep up to date with the multitude of recent government initiatives that have implications for youth work.
Each paper identifies the key issues within the theme and helps officers clarify their service's position.
The first briefing in the series looked at information, advice and guidance.
This briefing takes as its starting point the Russell Commission recommendations and their endorsement within Youth Matters, promising up to 150m investment in youth volunteering. Alongside this, revised definitions of volunteering to include governance, community activism and campaigning and involvement in shaping public policy have shifted the emphasis of volunteering away from philanthropy and towards more action-centred values.
